Tell us in a few sentences about the moment you first fell in love with fashion?

Playing with Barbie dolls as a child with my sister and friends, I usually spent more time dressing them than actually playing. Also, I think my sister inspired my love for fashion; she was always making her own little outfits for her dolls. I won’t lie though, I wasn’t the most fashionable of children, and I had some major cringe moments right into about the middle of high school years!

When I’m not designing I’m…

…carrying out the preparations and practical tasks that need to be done to complete the envisioned designs – designing is only a small fraction of the job.

If you had to match a song to your collection, what would it be and why?

New Navy – Zimbabwe (Flume Remix)

Three things we don’t know about you…

I’m overly cat-obsessed, struggle with insomnia, and I hate mushrooms – but haven’t actually ever tried one!

Yes, we can tell! Take a look @Tamaracheriedyson’s Instagram pics of cats here!

Tell us in a few sentences about the moment you first fell in love with fashion?

My best friend and I used to buy stacks of second hand Vogue Magazines for R1 each in early primary school. We used to drool over the pages for hours, counting how many times we could spot “that model” Kate Moss. I still count.

When I’m not designing I’m…

…catching up with friends and family.

If you had to match a song to your collection, what would it be and why?

Lies by Chvrches. It’s uplifting and piercingly hopeful, representing the victorious heart of my collection.

Three things we don’t know about you…

Franjipanis and strelitzias are my favourite flowers. Malawi is my favourite African country outside of South Africa, and I am a bit obsessed with pretty mugs. I collect them in pairs and have two cupboards full, ‘cause nothing beats good coffee in a pretty mug. Right?

Tell us in a few sentences about the moment you first fell in love with fashion?

I fell in love with fashion at the age of 11 when we first got DStv. I was absorbed by Fashion TV. It made for some friction in our household as I didn’t want to watch anything else, and this didn’t go down well with my sisters!

When I’m not designing I’m…

…relaxing on the couch, drinking coffee with music on, and surfing Pinterest!

If you had to match a song to your collection, what would it be?

The Acid from Basic Instinct, its such an unusual song full of emotions and reminds me of just taking a breath, letting go and expressing your emotions through art.

Three things we don’t know about you…

I love apples, chocolate and caffeine. I’m a bit of a freak about earrings; I just can’t resist them. I have my national colors in ringball as well as wrestling.

Tell us in a few sentences about the moment you first fell in love with fashion?

In my matric year I started realising that I could predict colour trends in retail stores just before they came in. That was the start of my love with fashion, and when I started studying all the long hours and hard work was exhilarating!

If you had to match a song to your collection, what would it be and why?

The old (56K) landline internet dial-up tone.

Three things we don’t know about you…

I lecture textiles and digital fashion at CTCFD – Cape Town College of Fashion Design. I’m mildly obsessed with Hannibal the TV series – but have to watch Adventure Time afterwards! I have a collection of typefaces, and download new ones often.

Tell us in a few sentences about the moment you first fell in love with fashion?

My love for clothes started at a very young age. I read my fashion magazines daily and updated my wardrobe frequently. Fashion TV and fashion programmes became a part of my life; I was always inspired by new trends. Creativity is something I developed over the years; I took art classes at school and it became my hobby. I fell in love with the fact that one can create something spectacular by ones thoughts and hands. When I’m not designing I’m…cooking or continue to looks for inspiration.

ELLE-Magazine

If you had to match a song to your collection, what would it be and why?

Lykke Li, Jerome. I don’t really have a reason for this song, but I kept finding it on repeat while designing.

Three things we don’t know about you…

I collect perfume bottles. My favourite movie is Kill Bill. I value quality time with friends and family.

Tell us in a few sentences about the moment you first fell in love with fashion?

It as the first time my twin and I travelled to London together on our own for a mini vay-cay away, and boy, did we shop! Ever since then I’ve had a fascination and keen interest for current trends and fashion as well as being aware of what’s happening around me.

When I’m not designing I’m… on the search for cake.

Cake

If you had to match a song to your collection, what would it be and why?

Magic Fingers by Hands, because it’s unabashedly randy but ultimately it’s an ode to enjoying life, possibly the most genuinely joyous song out there, and a song that can’t help but be uplifting.

Three things we don’t know about you…

I am one of a twin. I skipped my prom night to go on a surf trip with my handsome to Bali. I can’t start the day without my usual dose of chocolate.

Tell us in a few sentences about the moment you first fell in love with fashion?

It all starting with the love of paging through fashion magazines and having that dream of being able to create these beautiful garments and to be successful enough to, one day, have my designs displayed in these magazines. I’ve always had a very critical eye about clothing, and I always investigate the garment for how it has been manufactured.

When I’m not designing I’m…

Most probably with friends enjoying free time, but always sharing my work with the people in my life who cares about my talent.

Friends

If you had to match a song to your collection, what would it be and why?

What Now by Rihanna. The song is about her singing how human emotions are for the weak. She also mentions how she loves the power and fame, yet she feels empty inside and numb. It is easy to think that someone is happy (as assumed by others), but this song describes the reality of a person with pain and sorrow. The person I am describing through my range has lost her sense of emotion and doesn’t know how to feel, or cry. It is the feeling to be lost within oneself.

Three things we don’t know about you…

I am obsessed with rabbits; I have a baby English angora rabbit, called Gibson. My hair is naturally this curly. I will always stand up for others and put those whom I love first in my life.

Watch this space this week – we’re chatting to our finalists Tamara Cherie Dyson, Nadia Viljoen and Frances Pauls next!
